Wang Zhengming defeats Viktor Axelsen to surge into semi-final of Singapore open Super Series 2011
China’s emerging star, Wang Zhengming, penetrated into the Men’s Singles semi-final after beating Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen, in the quarter-final of the Singapore Open Super Series 2011, on Friday, June 17, 2011.
The World Number 20, Zhengming, continued his winning streak in the quarter-final by playing a positive and aggressive game. By beating Victor in the quarter-final match, the Chinese proved that his win over Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia in the pre-quarter-final
clash was not a fluke.
The quarter-final fight lasted for 31 minutes, where the Chinese stopped the winning run of the Danish shuttler in the event by beating him quite easily, in a straight-set contest.
In the first game, both players demonstrated top-class badminton in front of the packed indoor stadium in Singapore. As the match progressed, the Chinese started to play better by dominating the game at the net.
The spinning net shots of Zhengming earned him a considerable edge over his opponent, who was finding it very hard to return the tumbling bird. The Chinese reached at 11-7 until the interval of the first set.
Viktor, who has been playing outstanding badminton in this event, could not continue his dominance against the spirited Chinese, who was not making any errors in the game. Zhengming spent only 17 minutes in the first game to win it by a 21-15 score on the
board.
In the following set, the Chinese put up a remarkable show against the Danish shuttler, by playing at his best. He wasted no time in playing long rallies, as it quickly created opportunities to earn points against a confused Viktor, who failed to produce
good shots in the match.
Zhengming won the second set in just 14 minutes, with a convincing margin of 21-10. The Chinese proved that he is far better when compared to the Danish shuttler, in all aspects of the game. The two-set match ended with a 21-15 and 21-10 margin, in 31 minutes.
In the Men’s Singles semi-final of the Singapore Open, Zhengming will be up against either team-mate Chen Jin or Lee Hyun Il of Korea.
