Wang Zhengming stuns Du Pengyu in title match of Men’s Singles event - Swiss Open Update
China’s spirited male shuttler Wang Zhengming registered his presence in the international arena by claiming the Men’s Singles crown in the Swiss Open on Sunday, March 17, 2013.
He unseated a compatriot player Du Pengyu from the top spot of the victory stand by sealing an impressive straight-set win.
This 47-minute tussle was staged at the local badminton arena of Basel and both contenders kept the audience intact while piling final figures of 21-18 and 21-18.
Zhengming, who was underrated earlier in this tournament, alarmed his higher ranked rival by winning the first set with distinction and then served notice of his supremacy by claiming the second match point.
On the other hand, the hot favourite Du Pengyu failed to live up to the expectations and faced a woeful defeat.
The battle heated up when both Chinese shuttlers played impeccable badminton and showed their intentions immediately in the establishing rallies of the first set.
They made every effort to confound the opponent but neither of them could enjoy a permanent lead on the points table.
However, Zhengming managed to prevail in a couple of consecutive rallies and finished the first half of the set with a respectable score position.
After the mid-game break, Du Pengyu employed all of his brilliance and experience to narrow the gap and caught his competitor at 16-16.
At this stage, Zhengming showed superior finishing skills and swept the table with a tight yet favourable figure of 21-18.
The following game proved just a replay of the first one as both Chinese shuttlers were poles apart in terms of performance.
Initially, Du Pengyu managed to clinch few vital points and it seems he has revived his lost form but then a strong backlash from the opposing player proved the decisive factor.
Zhengming counterbalanced the situation by adding four consecutive points in his total and then strengthened his grip by putting a mountainous figure of 11.
Latter part of the game was filled with lot of sensation as both contenders put all they had to achieve their respective goals.
Finally, this nerve-racking contest ended when Zhengming placed a winning margin of 21-18 and earned the right to raise the Men’s Singles trophy in the Swiss Open.
