well, i got a used Cannondale chase off eBay, but i recently fell in love with the cross country biking more than dirt jumping.(something i never thought would ever happen) but anyway, i want to get a full suspension frame that could be used for some drops, some jumps, and the normal trails stuff like roots and stuff. Could i just go grab myself a new frame and transfer the parts from my chase? What would i have to do about the headset and BB? anything else helpful like a fram suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

  1. if u get a full sus wach the rear braket i've broke lyk 12 of them in a year

  2. well since the chase is more of a bmx style bike you would not be able to transfer many if any parts but you should look for a cannondale rush (that is not just the frame)

  3. Yeah for sure you can do that but if your dirt jumper is only a single speed your going to want to get a new gear set. but otherwise it is totally possible. I work  in a bike shop

  4. The seatpost size is probably the only thing you'll have to deal with as far as new parts.....and cables/housing, of course.  It's possible that you might need a new bottom bracket, but most are made to handle the two normal shell widths with spacers (or lack of them).  You may need a new front derailleur, too, but again, most now are using the large size and reducer adapters to fit smaller tubes.  If you need just the adapters, any bike shop should have some or be able to order a pack for you.  Have a shop remove and reinstall the headset into your new frame (and check the measurement of the head tube on the new frame.....if it's longer than your Chase, you'll have to remove spacers or buy a new fork).  And then there are disc caliper adapters which you might or might not need to swap.  (Oh....ok, this list is getting longer, sorry!  A new chain or a few extra links will most likely be necessary to accomodate the longer chainstays or if you go to a triple crank.)

Since you have a stiff 100mm fork on the Chase, you might want a more supple fork for the xc bike....I would.

Choose your f/s frame carefully....even with more travel, a lot of xc/am bikes won't handle a whole lot of abuse in the form of drops and jumping.   If you want to keep some of your style, you'll need a beefy all-mountain frame.  As long as you pair it with a good rear shock and a decent fork you'll still be happy when you pedal....and the frame pivots or welds won't c**p out on you too soon.   Jenson has some Intense 5.5's on sale cheap right now ($1400)...black only.  Kinda thinking about one of those myself actually.   :o)

Small piece of advice.....if you're like most bike nuts, you're going to want more than one bike since there is no do-all bike yet.  You might think about keeping your Chase and using it for what it's best at when you want to, and maybe picking up a good used or new 4"-5" xc bike for the trail riding.  It's a shame to let a good bike die, especially one that you got a good deal on.  You'll miss it when it's gone.   lol
