I was wondering if arabian horses can be good jumpers?? I have an arabian gelding, he's 10 years old. He's 14.3h[I think he is 15h] but anyways do you think that maybe I should get him trained? Or buy another horse that has already jumped or has been trained to? Advice please!!

Here's some pictures of him! :

  1. Arabian horses can be WONDERFUL jumpers. I had a gray Arabian gelding for 20 years that I did hunters, jumpers, and eventing on. He was not so good at the hunters, though. In speed jumping rounds he could jump the moon at a full gallop, turn on a dime, and give you 9 cents change. He never lost a jump off. It can actually be an advantage in jumpers to have a small horse because they can turn so much faster. He took to cross country like a duck to water and would jump anything I pointed him at. In his later years, when he got really good, the only conversation we had to have on course was something like this: Which one? That one. OK. Which one now? That one. OK.

You can get your horse trained for jumpers. I suggest working with a good local trainer for both you and your horse. Good luck.

  2. Some arabs are great jumpers.

Shogun certainly does alright for himself. ;)

Some arabs aren't so good. It depends on the individual.

A better question would be, do you want to start showing now, or wait possibly years until your horse is ready?

  3. I would say to try a month or two of training and if he is doing good then keep doing it, but if he isn't then you could start looking for a jumper. :)

  4. Arabians don't tend to be that great of jumpers...they make great jumpers when crossed with other breeds but to pure ones.

Though there are the rare few, I wouldn't risk it. If you are up to it and have the money I would buy a horse trained in it. I would hate to hurt him since Arab are kinda "fragile" when it comes to their bone and such :P

GOOD LUCK...and pretty horse he looks alot like my grey Arabian :) he even has a simular snip xD

  5. Technically you can get any horse to jump. The question if arabians are good jumpers depends on the horse, many arabians are to delicate and many do not make good jumpers over 2"9' and 3 feet. but there is the rare pure arabian who can jump. Most arabian jumpers are usually crossed with a heavier, stronger or taller breed.

like the Quarab, very smart and bulkier than a pure arabian usually a very good starter horse and cute little jumper. Anglo Arab ( TB Arabian ) these are fantastic jumpers and are usually taller but can be very hot.  But I have never seen the horse move but Another issue that may come up is the slight sway back it looks like he is developing. if you are going to start jumping him use proper padding and a saddle that fits him well.

  6. Arabians can do well - but first, you need to find a trainer and have them evaluate you and your horse.  I don't love the idea of a a person who's just learning to jump learning on a horse that's learning.

The biggest thing when teaching a horse is steady hands - you don't want to bang the horse in the mouth when you go over the jump.  That can make sour, unhappy  horses.

If you like your horse, he's pretty sensible, and broke - you can certainly give it a try.  Certainly, enlist a trainer to see what direction you should go and keep it fun for you and the horse.

    Best wishes!

  7. possibly he can but  u have to put in the effort

  8. If he has the potential then yes. But you dont want to risk him and you getting hurt. You have the choice between Hunter and Jumper.

Hunter-For form/looks and making it look easy! The judges are very picky and dont like to see Arab's doing Hunter.

Show Jumping-For speed and making sure you dont knock down a pole.

If your horse is fast or speedy then do Jumpers. If not, I would just get another horse so you can enter them into the show ring.

    GOOD LUCK!!

    :)

  9. it just depends on the horse. i have a 20 year old arab gelding that i just recently discovered loves to jump, but my other arab can't jump at all. most of the time, they don't do so well in hunter classes because the judges are so picky, but that's just from my experience. have fun with your horse :)
