I want to apply for a job at Job and Family Services in the county I'm moving to. I graduate with a Bachelor of General Studies in a couple weeks and the Human Resources woman gave me her email to send my resume and cover letter. I'm unsure of what to write as it asks for certain classes on the job description plus I don't know what to put in the cover letter. I've been a demonstrator selling products in Walmart. Also do I mention anything about being on cash assistance myself? I thought I could do this job well as I know the process from being on the receipent end myself but don't know what to write in the cover letter and my resume. For my resume before my advisor had me sometimes list classes to further clarify my major. Please help, I'll send part of the job description to make it easier.

I'm not quite sure what to put on my resume and cover letter as I haven't worked too many important jobs as I was in school FT and had a son and raised him for almost 2 yrs working a little here and there so I can finish school (I had a ton of papers). What can I focus on and anyone have any advice or help for me?

Job Description:

The primary purpose of the Employment & Financial Assistance Coordinator is to interview and screen clients for assistance programs and arrange emergency assistance. Work with a variety of people in a busy environment. Requires excellent organizational and oral communication skills and ability to use PC for data entry.

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of undergraduate major core coursework in behavioral science or social science or education.

OR completion of two years of technical education in behavioral science or social science or education.

OR four courses or two years experience in behavioral science or social science, one course or six months experience in business mathematics, one course or six months experience in business English, one course or six months experience in interviewing techniques, and one course or six months experience in typing, keyboarding or word processing.

Please help, I really want this job!! It'd be a great place to start and make getting off the system myself after graduating college a lot easier!

Thanks soooooooo much guys!!

  2. If by Family Services, you mean Family Services Agency Inc, then I work there! As a data analyst, though. Don't forget to mention your accomplishments and best qualities. Good luck!

  3. Listen to your advisor regarding the resume.

For the cover letter, the first paragraph should be a quick introduction outlining the job you are applying for.

The second paragraph is the personalized paragraph that addresses how your skills specifically align with the requirements of the job.  For example, you might say something along the lines of: "In addition to the skills I have acquired through my studies, I believe that I bring an added dimension to the job, having received assistance during my time in school..."

Do the same for your job at Wal-Mart by linking your experience there to dealing with the general public.

Close with a thank you and something like "I look forward to hearing from you in the near future."

I also suggest doing a web search for cover letter examples.  There may be other language you like better.
