Question:

Want to be a Family Doctor - My Plan?

I'm currently in high school, grade 11. My plan is to take a lot of diverse courses in high school, and of course the maths and sciences(chemistry and biology...3 would be too difficult?). Once I get to a university, I want to major in something non-sciences because I have done a lot of research that says majoring in something non-sciences would make your application stand out and more unique. After majoring in something (probably business related), I shall apply to medical school!

What do ya think? Should I take 3 sciences in high school or just two is fine. Tell me your thoughts, what I could do etc. And of course I'll try to volunteer at hospitals and etc.

Thanks!!

  1. You want to go to medical school, but you don't want to take science classes?  You need biology, chemistry, physics, and usually calculus at the college level to apply to medical school - the pre-medicine course sequence.  Avoiding science now will look bad to any school you apply to.  Three sciences is usually the minimum god universities ask for, and many expect four.

  2. Not at least minoring in a science is generally a bad idea. If you want, you can take business as a major, but as a minor I would definitely have one of the big 3- Biology, Chemistry or Biochemistry. It's unlikely you'd get enough science education to really do well on the MCAT without that sort of background. It can be done, but it's far more difficult to do well on the MCAT with a non-sciences major and a science minor than it is with a sciences major and a non-sciences minor.

I would recommend loading up on the sciences in HS. While they won't help much come medical school, they will make the early college courses easier to grasp.
