  1. What you do on your own time is your own perogative.  FAA rules govern (JAA also has similar rules.... as I'm sure every other country has) the timeframe in which you can drink... 8 hours and .04%.  Most airlines have their own policies... some 8 hours, some 12 hours, some 24 hours.  You need to follow these rules.  You will not find any '2nd' chances in this industry when it comes to alcohol abuse while at work.... or abusing company policy.  Now, if you have a few days off and want to head out to the Disco, have a few... or a lot... of drinks, and smoke-- nobody cares.  As long as you don't have a hisotry of alcohol abuse, you're not doing it in uniform (and you probably shouldn't brag about how great of a pilot you are when you can't stand up- that violates common sense-- the public's already nervous about drunk pilots), and it is in any way directly affecting your job-- nobody cares.  If you drink and drive home-- you'll have an issue.  If you get into a bar fight-- you'll have an issue.  But your time is your time.... party away- but make sure  you're smart about it.  Also, flying hungover is illegal... so if you end up with one of those 2 day hangovers from excessive drinking, you cannot fly.

As for the smoking, only a handful of airlines have no smoking policies.  In the industry you'll meet a lot of pilots that smoke on a regular basis.  I in no way recommend smoking, but if that's your choice-- smoke away.  You will need to maintain a first class medical and excessive smoking/drinking will not help... but there are no rules against it.

  2. YES!!!!!!! everyone above is correct you should avoid those things at all costs. smoking can make your eyesight worse and drinkng can make you more prone to be dizzy or sick when you fly. take it from me everyone here is rite. my grandfather was a military helecopter pilot and even when he was in hid 50s he had to train very hard and avoid certain things to keep him fit.

  3. Listening to The Village People repetitively has been known to have harmful effects on one's ability to hand-fly ILS approaches to minimums. Donna Summer, however, has a neutral, possibly enhancing, effect. Proceed accordingly.

  4. yes that correct you should avoid disco, smoking.and start to work on what you really want and what you want to be then im sure if you know the answer to the question then you will choose a right road, after all it all up to you to make good choice,But if really you want to become a

pilot, then smoking and discos wont get you there.

  5. I personally never drink or smoke for personal reasons, but you can drink and party, just remember this:

-8 hours bottle to the throttle, but most airlines require 12 hours.

-blood alcohol less than 0.04% when flying

-smoking can make you more succeptible to hypoxia than non smoker.

-smoking can reduce your night vision ability.

  6. The commerical pilot I knew drank and smoked.

I'd be more worried about your eye sight than music, drinking or smoking.

  7. Im a pilot for Fly Emirates and have been for a number of years. Every time you go to fly a plane they take a breathaliser and if you smoke you are almost deffinetelt going to fail the medicals every 6 months, and the achol and smoking will give you heart problems and other illnesses and then you'll be stopped from flying. I have a mate who got failed on his medical, his first year and he first 6 months slot. Now he is doing intensive phiysical for the next year unitl he can have a shot but my not even get it cause of other people who are helthy and hav'nt been kicked out.

    Hope that helps

  8. Well, once you are a pilot you might drink more!

    But I wouldn't recommend it.

  9. Yeah sure great. Then what are you going to do on layovers.

  10. avoid drinking and smoking you need to be fit.

    duh.

  11. ....depends on what kind of pilot.

    For the military, yes!

You can find a list of requirements on their site. I think I saw on the airforce site that you cannot have a history of hay-fever. Darn!

  12. u shud avoid smoking full stop regardless of wht job u want to do

  13. I've got a website that will hopefully answer some of the questions medically speaking: http://www.flyfortheairlines.com/

Smoking: It's a good idea to stop. The Class 1 Medical requires certain lung capacities and peak flows.

Drinking: As long as it's not excessive, a small amount has actually been proven to be good for you (mainly wine though). Otherwise, drinking isn't too much of a problem, as long as you're not an alcoholic!

Discos: Well, there is a requirement for good hearing, but I shouldn't think that it would be too much of a problem if you don't go regularly!

  14. If you have to ask this then you don't need to become a pilot. Do you want to be in a jet with some one that drinks a fly a jet.

    Sorry to be so harsh!
