A cruise to the Greek islands would be an excellent idea. There are so many islands and there are near each other so in a short time you could visit many islands

We were on our first cruise ship and first trip to Europe.  Our cruise took us to the Mediterranean with the following ports of call:

Barcelona, Spain

Palermo, Sicily (Italy)

Naples/Pompeii/Sorrento/Isle of Capri (Italy)

Olbia, Sardinia (Italy)

Rome, Italy

Florence/Pisa, Italy

Marseilles, France

Monaco/Monte Carlo

I'd check out www.cruisecritic.com to review the various cruise lines AND cruise ships that sail the Mediterranean.  I found this website had reviews and surveys of each cruise ship including great suggestions and "BAD" things to be aware of.  All the information I found was right on the money and even the "Bad" reviews helped me prepare accordingly so our trip turned out the best Anniversary present.  My only wish now is that we had done this sooner rather than wait 20+ years.

I ultimately had planned to go Celebrity cruise lines Millenium, but changed to Disney Cruise Line as they were having their inaugural Mediterranean cruise on their Ship "Magic" (which ultimately was a great decision when the Celebrity ship accidentally hit underground rocks while at a port and had to cancel 80% of their trip).

Again, I check out www.cruisecritic.com and do some homework and also run down to your local bookstore and get a book to read up on the places you want to visit...it'll help you decide what shore excursions you want to take.

Who is best for what?  Who has the best shore excursions?  Who has the best service?  Who has the best food?  Who has the best ship for families?  Who has the best ship for young couples?  Who has the best ship for singles?  Who has the best ship for senior citizens?  Who has the best itineraries?

There are cruises starting from Italy  Mediterranean and there are cruises starting from  Athens Greece to Greek islands and Eastern Mediterranean. By taking a cruise from Piraeus port in Athens you will be able to visit more places in a certain time  check www.greek-cruises.com for the 2008 cruise programs

If you mean price? Then for sure http://galaxy.joystar.com just ask for a price quote though. Royal Cruise lines are very nice but there not the best. LouMArtravel Lost there RCCL License so you cant book RCCL with them, LOL

There are several cruise lines and itineraries to choose from for a Mediterranean cruise and also you can choose 4 days, 6 or 7 days, or a longer 12 day, plus some cruises are round trip and others are one-way (i.e., start in Venice and end in Rome).

The cruise lines that you can choose from that are pretty much based in the US are Holland America, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Norwegian, and Carnival. Then there are some European based lines like Costa and some high end (i.e., very expensive but exclusive) lines like Regent Seven Seas and Crystal.

A 12 day cruise of the Mediterranean can be had, if you book early (like now for next fall) for about $1500 per person or less on most cruise lines. The high end lines will cost about double that per person. Then you have to factor in air fare which for us was about $800 each from the east coast US, and a few hundred for travel insurance.

So you need to know your budget and how much time you will have for the cruise. Also, it a good idea (and recommended by all good travel agents) to plan to fly to the departure port at least a day early so that you are less likely to miss your cruise due to an airline problem; and also to give yourself time to adjust somewhat to the new time zone.

Its easy to shop the Mediterranean cruises by simply going to the cruise line web sites and clicking on the link that say "destinations" or some such similar, and then select "Europe" or the "Med". You can also read about the port stops online. So if you are not sure whether you want to go on a cruise that stops in, for example Mykonos,  you can read what the cruise line says about that port stop. But look at what's available before you look for the right combination of ports for you.

Since you did not say what the age of the people traveling is (it does make a difference) I recommend Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, or Princess.  They all have quality ships, cruises food and service.  Cruisers on these ships tend to be in the 40 to 60 age group, as opposed to younger on Carnival and much older on Holland America.  

I have cruised on Norwegian, Princess, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean and can vouch for their good service.  I did my Med cruise on Royal Caribbean and I was very pleased with everything about it.
