Want to buy my first car - small, good on fuel, automatic - recommendations?

I'm looking to buy my first car and have a budget of about £1500. Something small, good on fuel (city commute or motorway?) and has to be automatic. I live in London and need to commute 12 miles to work each day and back. 1-2 times a month, we drive up to cities 50-200 miles away.

Any recommendations of car types?

Your budget may be an issue, but Japanese cars like Honda and Toyota are making headlines and very good consumer feedbacks.
