Question:

Want to emmigrate to oz, with a downs syndrome child?

My partner has 60 points under the skilled migrants scheme (floor layer). We have 1 "normal" child aged 12 and 1 child aged 7 with Downs Syndrome. This child will need special schooling (at present in a special needs school). She has had surgery for a hole in the heart but is presently on 5 yearly reviews and is on no medication. She is deaf and has a cleft palate and severe learning delays, but repeat, is on no medication for anything (and I don't expect her to be in the near future, buy hey I don't have a crystal ball!!). What are our chances of emmigrating to oz? Husband is on the skills in demand list, my 12 year old son is "normal", will my daughter be a problem? Please answer as we don't want to waste our money on a migration agent if there is absolutely no chance.

  1. Honestly the best people to speak to is the immigration department, as there maybe certain circumstances that will allow a child to enter Australia with a disability.

Australia does have fairly stringent health checks for those wishing to immigrate to Australia. To protect Australians from diseases, illnesses, and or safety & well being of residents. People who have a medical condition that requires specialist treatment, or on going medical care, may find they will be rejected, because of the medical costs.

Its my understanding that each person and their family's situation, qualifications etc, are taken into consideration.  Especially if your husband does met the skilled migrants scheme.

Do you know of anyone in Australia or have relatives who would sponsor you? This may help.

Please check out the links below as they maybe able to give you more information.

Hope this helps and good luck

  2. they may be like canada and the uk in that unless you have a family member already in aus they will not allow your child in due to medical problems. unless you have a spouse or family born in aus to sponsor you.

    read thier immigration law.
