Want to get my drivers License? Have a question...?

OK, am 15 and my dad is going to buy me a car. I really love cars and will like to have my driver license when am 16. Can someone please explain to me if i can get my driver license when am 16? Will it have restrictions? And if yes can i get one without restrictions? Also what do i have to do to get a drivers license when am 16? Am currently 15 will be turning 16 this year. I live in USA in NY, NY. Please need to know as much info as possible this is really important for me...

I live in NYC.

You cannot get a unrestricted license at 16 (no questions).  At age 16 you can only get Junior license.  YOu have to get driver's ed (in you school) to convert your junior license at 17.

Otherwise your junior license becomes full license at 18.

You will have to pass the requirements that are different for state to state. Drivers training, tests, written and drivers.

What you need to remember is that when you get your license at 16 you are given the lowest possible insurance rates and the  option on no restrictions. From that point on it is up to you. YOU get to decide your insurance rated and restrictions from the. Drive safely and  get in no accidents and your Ins. and license will be just fine.  Drive like an idiot and your in trouble, not just with the law but watch out for your Ins, company.

It varies from state to state, so call your local DMV (department of motor vehicles) and get a drivers handbook. You'll need a permit before you can get your license (for CA, you have to have had your permit for  months, and you can only get it after you are 15 1/2, but in Iowa, for example, you can be 14 and get your permit). Before you get your permit you'll most likely have to take driver's ed. before you can drive with your permit, and before you can get your license you'll need to take behind the wheel lessons from a driving school.

There are restrictions for underage drivers. There is no way to get around that.  In CA its illegal to drive people under the age of 25 ( i think? and they must be licensed) for a year without a licens aged 25+ year old. again the one year law is something specific to California.  Honestly, its not too hard to look this stuff up online, or to visit the DMV and get a handbook.
