Want to hook up a second computer to DSL internet?

I have my regular used desktop hooked up to DSL (ATT/SBC) basic. I have an old Gateway that is running ME. How do I hook up that computer to my internet connection? Also will this make my main computer's internet slower? And what all do I need?

  1. Your Internet will be slower only if both computers are using up your Internet at the same time.  I do not think you will notice any serious decrease in speed.

If you do not already have a router, I suggest you get one.  You can purchase something like this:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...

This has ethernet, wireless, and powerline.  I suggest buying this just for future proofing.  I recommend using the powerline adapter rather than the wireless.  Just shut the wireless off or unscrew the antennas.  When you buy a new laptop and want to roam around the house, then set your wireless up.

Basically, this video shows you the router that you are getting with the link above.  The link from newegg.com also has the adapter for the computer.

  2. You will need a router.  Plug the DSL modem directly into the router (the WAN port) and then get extra ethernet cords and plug them into the additional computers.

As for making your main computer's internet slower, that depends on whether one computer is constantly downloading or not.  If it's not, then you're safe!  Typically, you won't notice a difference.  I have about 8 computers connected to a single router (plus wireless connections too) and it's super fast for me.
