I have not got a loft with any tank in it. I have a big hot water tank in the cubboard and a small tank i assume it carries the cold water

  1. There are so many different plumbing systems and layouts ,I would say that the small tank above your cylinder is the expansion tank for your heating, nothing to do with your plumbing.Get a local plumber to give you a free estimate and ask him the options.I am a plumber and give free estimates over the phone ,as you actually rqr a survey I would charge £60.for the visit if you lived in my area.Good luck.

  2. Mixer showers work best on high pressure systems.

Is your system low or high pressure?

Is your mixer shower pumped, or are you planning to add a pump?

if a low pressure system, what capacity cold water tank do you have?

Whats the flow rate of the hot & cold supply?

You need to know all the above.

Best that DIY people only use mixer showers on high pressure systems, unless they are knowledgeable with overcoming the problems with low pressure systems. Not always straight forward.

  3. The two other answers are from ( IMHO ) honest tradesmen giving good advice. The comment regarding mixed pressures is very important to note.

You may have a bit of a mixed cold water setup where a small head tank supplies cold water to your hot water cylinder, the mains supplying cold water to everything else ( My Mums has this arrangement ), this means your hot water's at low pressure and your cold's at a high pressure. This is no good for a mixer shower.

To confirm this you may need some expert advice, or you may be able to work it out for yourself.

If this is the case an electric shower may be a better option.
