  1. go to www.uschess.org and click on new to chess, lots of information

  2. Chess is a recreational and competitive game played between two players. Sometimes called Western chess or international chess to distinguish it from its predecessors and other chess variants, the current form of the game emerged in Southern Europe during the second half of the 15th century after evolving from similar, much older games of Indian and Persian origin. Today, chess is one of the world's most popular games, played by millions of people worldwide in clubs, online, by correspondence, in tournaments and informally.

The game is played on a square chequered chessboard with 64 squares arranged in an eight-by-eight square. At the start, each player (one controlling the white pieces, the other controlling the black pieces) controls sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The object of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king, whereby the king is under immediate attack (in "check") and there is no way to remove it from attack on the next move.

The tradition of organized competitive chess started in the sixteenth century and has developed extensively. Chess today is a recognized sport of the International Olympic Committee. The first official World Chess Champion, Wilhelm Steinitz, claimed his title in 1886; Viswanathan Anand is the current World Champion. Theoreticians have developed extensive chess strategies and tactics since the game's inception. Aspects of art are found in chess composition.

One of the goals of early computer scientists was to create a chess-playing machine, and today's chess is deeply influenced by the abilities of current chess programs and by the possibility to play online. In 1997, a match between Garry Kasparov, then World Champion, and a computer proved for the first time that machines are able to beat even the strongest human players.

  3. i tink u can read it online or either tat u can borrow a book in the library abt chess

  4. It has become a game where the people with photographic memories win.  It used to be a game where the best thinkers won but now has become little more then a place where games from the past are replayed by people who have memorized them and add one or two moves of their own to achieve a different outcome.  Doubt it - computers now beat the best humans - computers do not think - they are programmed with the best possible moves - I have lost interest in the game since I realized this and only play it when I do no want to have to think because I know some DUMB computer can and will beat me or anyone else I know anytime, anyplace.  It has become a VERY boring game.  Card games which involve elements of chance and randomness are much more interesting.  The chance of some random low odds event occurring lends a degree of uncertainty to the game.  It is a game for humans where "intuition and bluffing" play a big part.  This simulates real life better then ANY game of chess ever has or ever will.

BTW  I was the best chess player in my High School - not bragging - just fact - and I now consider it a meaningless achievement.  Take up poker, its fun, its HUMAN (I am terrible at it - SO FAR - JUST YOU WAIT)!!!!  LOL
