Can anyone tell me in American universities, for a year how many semesters they have?

The university I attended had four quarters (fall, winter, spring and summer) instead of semesters. However, I think most American colleges and universities have two semesters.

Up to 3 semesters: fall, spring, and summer.  You generally don't have to take classes in the summer if you don't want to.
