The POWER of the Consumer is the ULTIMATE power in a society such as ours in the United States. ... All “We the People”, have to do is, Not drive or buy any gas for just 1 day a week for a month. By then the Oil companies will be lowering prices, quickly, and even the government, which has been padded by oil company hush money for years, will be begging “We the People” to drive!

  1. No, I dont want to lower the price of gas. I want it to go up to $10 so people really think before they get in the hummer and drive to the mall and buy 12 big macs. I want people to think that maybe they will ride their bike for local trips and car pool and not to drive to the shops to get a bag of sugar that they forgot yesterday. I want the price of gas to be so expensive that there is not a single SUV on the road.

  2. That is not correct.  ExxonMobile has huge amounts of capital and a good credit rating.  ExxonMobile finds out no one will buy gasoline on the first of the month.  They can then:

       1.  Store oil in tankards.  That's where the credit comes in -- they can use they cash reserves to buy tanks to hold the gas that isn't selling on that one day of the month.

       2.  Perhaps sell it to companies, who would probably ignore your boycott.  They could offer to reduce prices to companies slightly (like one cent a gallon) if they bought on the day everyone else was boycotting the gasoline.

       3.  They could sell it to the developing world.

       4.  They could merely reduce the amount of oil that was shipped from their locations around the world to the U.S. by one day the day before the boycott, knowing they would sell more gas the rest of the week.

Since your plan doesn't require a change in consumption, that means that oil companies will merely make up whatever losses they have on that one day by keeping supplies in reserve to sell the next day.  If the boycott was nationwide, they could even just close those gas stations on those days and stop shipments on that day, meaning that they can make up for the lost revenue by reducing costs.

Your plan doesn't reduce our dependence on oil -- if oil disappeared tomorrow, we would still be 100% screwed (for a while.)

Finally, your plan ignores that gas prices are not set by greedy oil companies, they are set by supply and demand.  There is no "fat" to trim off the gas prices -- the taxes remain constant, the price of operating the stations cannot be reduced, buying the oil costs money, processing it costs money, and moving it costs money.  Gas companies don't make huge profit MARGINS, and so even if gas companies ran like non-profits, prices would still be relatively painful.  The main reason prices are going up is because production has remained constant and demand has increased by a lot.  In fact, gas prices staying high is good, because it increases the chances that someone will invent the perfect electric car/cellulostic ethanol vehicle that will make the world wonder why we ever drove gasoline powered cars in the first place.  If all the consumers in the world who had the resources either gave up their cars entirely, used car sharing, bought electric cars or bought the top fuel-efficient cars (Prius, etc.), oil prices would drop tomorrow and every day after that.

  3. Tell my boss not to fire me for not showing up for a month.  If the buss where available don't you think I'd ride it.  The service of MTA is so poor in Flint, Michigan that one would get fired in a week for attendance.  Driving in Michigan is not a choice, its the only option.

  4. Gas prices are determined by balance in the global markets, to reduce price the demand for gas should be reduced, either by reducing the average gas quantity per consumer, or by reducing the number of consumers.

If you want gas prices to be reduced, convince a lot of people to stop using gas, or make them stop.

    Just don't kill us consumers.

  5. The major problem we have here is the fact that we are being held to ransom, not by the oil companies or government, but by futures speculators. These are the big players who buy and sell commodity "futures". Their trading has nothing to do with production and delivery costs, or anything else related to getting the product out of the ground and to the consumer. How our governments allowed this to happen is beyond me though.

If you check the prices in your newspaper, it will say something like "north sea crude contracts for delivery on x*x date". I still don't understand why us Aussies are still only paying 1/3 of Britain and Europes' prices. And we still complain!

So how do we combat it? Maybe drive more. This will use up remaining supplies quicker, and bring in better options sooner!

On the subject of better options, you can run your car (whatever you happen to drive) partly on water, saving 50%+ of your current gas usage. This is 90 year old technology, which has been suppressed for years by those dominating the fossil fuel industries. Bear in mind that all these fossil fuels, when burned, release "solar" energy, as they are all composed of vegetable matter. We just need to find a better way of releasing the energy.

To learn more about how you can have your car running partly on water by next weekend, for about $200,visit the link below. We all need to do our bit, and now we can!

  6. *yawn* I've seen so many of these ideas.  But never have I ever seen them actually work.

  7. Sorry, the logic escapes me. People have to drive X amount no matter what. Work, groceries, kids to school, you name it. The amount of gas purchased would be roughly the same, just divided by a different # of days.

And besides, trying to get "We the people" together to do anything is nearly impossible.

  8. Want to lower the price?

#1 Get in a time machine and go back and do allow Bush to steal the election in 2000.

#2 Same time machine and do not invade Iraq..

#3 Tell those like Unical who have a hand in controlling the Iraqi Oil supply to release some of the oil instead of withholding the oil to artificially cause a shortage so they can rake in astronomical profits.

  9. I dont think that it will happen because you have to much diversity in this country to make a good point because you can say all this say in a small city but then in a bigger city people wouldnt even think twice because they need to go to work to their offices and then you have people that just dont give a shilt so yea i wish it was possible whilst you might be able to convince me you will always have that one stubborn m**o to deal wit good point though
