Want to make sure I am doing water changes right?

I have a betta in a 5 gallon tank with a filter and heater. I got him about 2 weeks ago and have done his water change once and his next water change is coming soon so I want to make sure I am doing everything right, I siphoned out about 70% of the water and steadily refilled his tank with warm tap water half a gallon at a time with about 3-4 drops of aquasafe in each half gallon until his tank was full again. He seems to be doing really good, however I have noticed since I did the water change he hasn't been building bubble nests anymore, but I'm not sure if that means anything really. Like I said he is doing good but I just want to make sure I did everything right to keep him healthy. Thanks!

  1. Sounds like you are doing a great job. you should only need to change 20-30% water each week, but i'm guessing you aren't doing it every week? oh and one more thing, when you say you siphon out the water, do you mean you remove the water via vacuuming the gravel? if so, then yes, it seems to me you are doing everything fine.

    good luck :)

To Sam H: wrong. so long as she keeps the filter running and therefore wet, the bacteria will be fine. also, leaving the water out does is NOT acceptible. it does evaporate the chlorine, however there are other harmful chemicals in the water which are not removed. therefore, water dechlorinator is a must.

  2. My tank has a filter that is set on 78 degrees.  I usually run cold water and let it set out for about 30 minutes before adding to my tank.  I always use the water conditioner.  I bought Tetra Aqua Safe and the bottle states that it works immediately.  The water in my tank is usually kind of cold.  A friend of mind used water to hot and it killed her betta.  Just feel the temperature of the water in your tank.  I usually change out about 20% of the water.

  3. Wrong. You must not replace more than half of the water at once, it gets rid of the good bacteria and stresses the fish. You must also leave the water for at least 1 hour to dechlorinate, don't take chances with dechloriantion chemicals they may not work. Bubble nest building is not a certain sign that something is wrong
