Want to move to Austin, Texas......?

Can anyone tell me what would be a good location for me to move to that is similar to my current living? I live in central NY, I live in a two bedroom apartment in a complex, and we pay $655/mo, which includes heat & hot water, very low crime rate (I'm in the suburbs). I have 3 kids and need to move into a three bedroom that's just about as affordable as what I have now. I DON"T want to live in the ghetto! I was looking into Rosemont at Williamson Creek on East St. Elmo Road. Does anyone know anything about this place? Also, what is the year-round weather like? Thank you.

  1. i live at the villas on guadalupe. its pretty sweet but since ur not in college and have three kids then i would move to the round rock or pflugerville area which have good schools for ur kids and the cities are basically part of austin

the weather here is hot....it can reach to the 100s during july and august. its usually 90s to 80s between sept-oct then the temps begin to drop in nov and dec. central texas gets a good freeze every year during jan or feb when temps are like 40 to 50 maybe 60. but for the most part it is hot. im used to it though bc i was born and raise in central texas

  2. you should move to down town.

  3. Anywhere east of I-35 is bad in the Austin metro area (very runned down in fact and dirty). The nicest areas are around the lakes (Lake Travis, Lake Austin), but it will cost you around $1200/month or more starting out. Crime has become more of an issue in recent years due to the growth, but every major city has this problem with a high growth rate. Hardly any apartment complexes or houses that pay for utilities in the area, because summertime cooling costs are very high.

Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend Austin personally. It was a much better city to live in during the late 80's to late 90's and I lived there for 13 years total (on three different occasions) and I left last year because of me finding higher pay in Phoenix.

I lived in cities such as Las Vegas, Atlanta and now I live in Phoenix (my birthplace) and I enjoy living in Phoenix so much better than everywhere else I've lived. Summers are still hot in Arizona, but the schools are better overall and it rains maybe at most twice a month. It a clean city to for the most part and people there are very cool.

  4. I was there today, not a ghetto thats the north side of town, the apartments in that area the southside are all farely new,Ill be on the southside tomorrow around there leave this question up and ill give you the heads up,im a new arrival myself so as far as year round i couldnt tell you but being from a similar climate portland oregon,i can tell you the humidity and heat will be tough for a month or two,

  5. I live in Austin tx and its awesome!!! If you want to live in central austin in a three bedroom apartment its going to cost you an arm and a leg. It suprised me when you said you only pay 655 for a two bedroom in central ny, because I live in north west austin about 30 minutes away from down town (with no traffic of course) and I pay $640 for a niced sized one bedroom apartment. I cant think of a single nice apartment in austin that you can get for that low of a price. All I can say is DONT move East of I-35! I really like north austin, possibly look into moving to Pflugerville (north of austin). I've never heard of those places sorry.

Yeah the year round weather is HOT. No joke. Spring is beautiful, but still pretty warm, and in the winter dry and cold, but its hardly ever below 30 degrees. Never snows, but its kinda gross in the winter.

    Good Luck!!!

  6. 655 r u kidding! Im moving there

st elmos in the south east part not ghetto ghetto just a little bit i have a cousin that lives near there, its not that great, you should move to Buda only 11 miles south of downtown, nice schools there, but hardly any apartments, ur not gonna find a 655 apartment anywhere near here in a nice place.

Summer- hot like ur in an oven or pouring down rain

Autum- cools down in late september, chilly not cold

Winter- occasional ice storm every year or so, say goodbye to snow

    Spring- very nice

but they say that if you don't like the weather in texas wait a few minutes and it will change

  7. Honestly, I don't think that you're going to be able to find a 3bedroom apartment in Austin for under $700 that isn't in a bad area.  I'm not even sure you could find that kind of deal anywhere in the city, especially one that includes bills like electricity and water.  Some complexes pay the water bill, but I don't know of any that will pay the heating and cooling costs (which is the largest bill in the summer with all the A/C that is needed). There's lots of duplex rentals up in Round Rock/Pflugerville that might be worth a look.  You could also look down in Kyle/Buda, which tends to be cheaper than the northern suburbs.

Try contacting a local apartment finder (like Habitat Hunters http://www.habitathunters.com/ ) and see what they say, they can give you a lot more information about potential areas/complexes, and can give you price ranges.

  8. I totally agree with the answers that said don't move east of I-35.  It really is a bad area.  Not safe at all for adults much less children.  I was raised in "Deep East Austin" and still own property there.  Trust me.  I answered another one of the questions like this about Austin and was called a bigot.  Hello, I don't want drug dealers, gun shots, etc.  That is why I moved my Mom out of there.
