  1. You can't go wrong with HP, but in desktops I havent found anyone who can compete with Dell specials. I bought entire systems for less than I would have paid for the parts. $400  including 19" LCD and free shipping.

  2. i love these answers on yahoo answers with little depth of explanation - as if there is only one answer in life - the computer that they bought

What are you using the computer for ?

Ballistic missile research or just browsing ?

If you are just browsing - or simple word processing / office work ?

Then you do not need high end

Most computers now are overkill by any means

How long are you planning on keeping the computer ?

If you are planning on keeping it for a number of years - then note that although dell are very good value upfront - that the parts are very proprietary in most cases

What that means is that in two years if your computer breaks down a number of the components ( motherboard , power supply for example)

are dell only.  You cannot swap in any standard component

Read big dollars and not worth fixing

If you get a dell - consider the 3 year warranty as money well spent - that is if you consider keeping the computer for 3 years

Upgrades often on a dell are hard to do - if physically possible

If you can - find or have a computer made of standard parts

However easily 70 % of computers now are rather proprietary in nature - read dell and hp ( many)

Note that the demands of the new vista are very large - although components - memory , hard etc are cheap - vista needs great amounts of hardware to have it run anywhere as well as xp

    - most people buy computes to run programs - browsers , office etc not to run operating systems  - unless the computer is meant as furniture

it is often noted that to run xp on 512 mb of ram - requires approx 2 gig of memory for vista

Most new computers now come with vista only

Someone ( who knows what they are doing ) can install xp but you will have to purchase and xp license ( not cheap)  and it is not a task for beginners to find all the device drivers for xp for new computer hardware

If you can - find a used office quality computer with xp installed and an xp license - that is best value

If you are doing only standard stuff then nobody ever went wrong with a mac

If not a refurb high quality business quality computer ( HP or IBM  for example ) are always wise choices.  For the above reasons a used dell is not a good idea generally.

    Hope this helps
