Question:

Want to resign without going to war!?

Hello everyone!

I started what I thought would be a great career in HR as a Rep., However, it has been h**l since day nine. I am in the process of securing employment elsewhere and I'm almost ready to resign.

The employee manual states "management employees will be reviewed at 120 days or four months, however, I have now been there six months without a formal review. This same manual states management employees should give 1 month notice when terminating employment. Do I have to give them the one month, or can I walk with only two weeks? (I might mention the agency is currently laying people off due to the state budget crisis in Illinois). Are there excuses that I can use to leave without giving a months notice?

I cannot stand working for this place and can only think about giving them two weeks. I live in Illinois, which is an at-will state. I'm not into bad mouthing them, I would like to leave before I walk out and quit!

Any help you provide would be appreciated. Thank for taking the time to answer my question.

  1. better to do everything professionally and responsibly, especially given that the company hasn't treated you so, coz this shows both yourself and future employers that you are a person of integrity.  you don't have to go t*t for tat with the firm and be spiteful due to their bad treatment of you, that just sinks you below your decent level.  hold yourself up to a higher standard and give the required notice, move on and don't look back.

    all the best...

  2. If you walk......that will follow you for your entire career.......you would be surprised to find out how my times you run across these guys in your life time..your manual states SHOULD give 30 days......give two weeks.......never ever burn bridges behind you...........

  3. If it's at will, I don't see how they can require a month's notice since at will means either party can terminate the relationship at any time. Read the at will statement in your manual to see if it says anything else about this. (There's usually a separate statement in addition to mentioning it in other policies.) The standard 2 week notice is more of a courtesy to both the employer and employee to wrap up any loose ends, and hopefully start looking for a suitable replacement. I would give at least 2 weeks notice, and perhaps mention earlier that you are looking for employment elsewhere without giving a formal notice. Tread lightly since you don't want to make anyone mad at you. It will follow you throughout your career and will make your last few days there a living h**l!

  4. Just give one month notice. I know you hate it but leave decently, at your next job you can say the truth. "I left my last job because I wanted to work at a different place and do something different. I gave them a one month's notice as that is what they asked from their employees." It makes you look good when you do things the employers way. That way they also know that you just won't up and quit without notice.

EDIT: Don't quit without notice because you will have to probably put this job on your resume, and the new employer might call this old job and ask about you.

Just write a resignation letter that says "I have thought long and hard about this difficult decision but I've decided to resign on _____. Thank you for the opportunity to work here and I wish you all the very best. Sincerely, ___"

Do not write anything negative or offer any constructive criticism, even if they ask you to fill out a form about how they can improve, etc. Be nice to everyone and just leave on good terms.

  5. Since you've only been there six months, I wouldn't feel guilty about just giving 2 weeks notice unless they are very short staffed and your leaving in 2 weeks would really put them in a major bind.  It's possible that when you turn in your notice, they'll just tell you to leave then.
