Has anyone gone for month or 6. What are the chances to rent a small apartment in a nicer part of town and be able to go out daily, visit museums and such. I hate supervised tours and 1 week is not enough for the Louvre let alone all the other sights I want to take in.

  1. I often go to Paris for a month at a time but have never stayed as long as six months.

There are apartments available for short term rentals and for a stay of a month or more are a very sensible alternative to a hotel.

Here are some websites you can start looking at:

  2. It's a great idea! That way you can also take the train and explore other wonderful places in France like Provence, Lyon, Savoie, etc!

Go to www.google.fr, and type "appartements louer paris"

There are so many. I picked a couple that look great, and that are translated to English.

  3. It is of course possible to rent a small flat but you should pay the price (I would say 1.000 to 1.500 € a month). This looks terribly expensive to the French expat I am.

About the duration of a contract, a short time lease is still possible even if this is not the standard.

I often hear about a shortage of available appartments in the nicer parts of the town already (even in the worst parts though). Could a real Parisian confirm this?

Google: "louer un appartement à Paris", you may find something meeting your requirements.

  4. not really
