I am 27 and in pretty good shape but want to start competing. I live in an area of WV/Northern VA that doesn’t have any boxing gyms but the gym I do go to does have equipment that I use a lot. I know a lot of the basics of boxing from training at a boxing gym a year back as well. My question is, since I don’t have a trainer or any prospective trainers or coaches where do I even start? Do I go ahead and get my license and look around for a coach while I train myself for now? I’m not quite sure how the whole process works. Thank you and if you think you can help me further feel free to email me at mattyiceva@hotmail.com

Thank you

  1. Send me an email, I can help you. I box and have a trainer, just ask me whatever you need to know, im more than happy to help

  2. You should message Butch Hiles at www.advancedbkj.com and look up info on places to train there.  I used to go to BJJ in Charleston once a week until I quti having gas money to do anything.  There is an ABKJ myspace page if you would like to have it, but the actual website would do you fine.  They have a discussion forum (linked under multimedia) where you can ask all the questions you need.  Many on that site should be able to help you out.

If you can't find somewhere to train, you're going to be at a huge disadvantage.  Most people (including me for BJJ) just don't have extra money to drive to class.  I was an hour or a little more from class.  If you want it you might have to sacrifice.

As far for now goes, definitely do what you can.  Get your cardio up.  I can grapple (not so much now lol) but stand up is h**l.  My friend and I were training on my heavy bag in my garage once and he said, "You're in a whole new world of cardio now aren't you?" laughing at me barely holding my arms up.

Definitely do what you can man.  You can have my heavy bag for half what I paid for it, but it would be h**l on each of us delivering it.  I'd do what I could, mostly cardio of course, until I found somewhere to train.  If you find a coach he'll know what to do.  Hope I helped you out.

Try ABKJ's forum or website contact info and get in touch with someone.  I messaged Butch before I ever went to a BJJ class about times/dates/location and he was really helpful and open to any question I had.
