  1. Congrats on the decision!

First things first, you should go and get yourself fitted for a pair or two of good running shoes.  Go to a real running store, not the nike store, modell's, or any place of that sort.  At a running store, they will be more knowledgeable, and will be able to more easily address your concerns.

Next, be sure you have something you can run in, it isn't important so much what it is as that you are comfortable in it.

Next, set a first goal.  Maybe it will be speed based, like "I want to run a 7-minute mile", or maybe it will be time based, like "I want to be able to run 20 minutes without stopping."  Whatever it is, be sure to have a sure goal in mind.

Decide how you are going to achieve this goal.  If you're looking to run for 20 minutes straight, for example, maybe start by running for 2 minutes, and then walking for 2 minutes, and do that for 20 minutes or half an hour.  After maybe a week and a half or 2 weeks, maybe make the run:walk ratio 3:2, and keep increasing it until you feel comfortable trying for your goal.

Once you reach your goal, keep going!  Find a new goal, and reach for it!

    Other important things to know:

-Stretching is VERY important.  I recommend stretching with a rope, wharton-style.  I'll include a link for that below

-It is very important to eat something, anything after you work out.  At first, you may not need this, but as you get to working harder, you may want to have something ready to eat, like a granola bar, peanuts, cereal, or whatever works for you, when you get back.

-Don't underestimate the power of icing your legs, or any part of them that hurts.

-Runner's World magazine is very good.  I'll include a link to their website as well.

    Have fun!

  2. start out running 1-2 miles for 2-3 weeks and then make it longer and run at that pace for another 2-3 weeks and so on

your body will get used to the pounding, your mind will get the feel for it, and you will ultimately be more healthy

    good luck!
