  1. start out with a longer board like 7'0 or something in that range

  2. There are several kinds of boards:

    1. Malibu

    2. Mini-Malibu

    3. Short board

    4. Gun

    5. Beginner's board

The standard beginner's board is pretty scary and best left for surfing lessons or if you can't afford something better. Guns and short boards are for big wave surfing and more advanced surfers.

The larger the board the easier it will be to manuever. Get a mal or mini-mal if you're never going to be riding waves more than 4-5 feet high. Ideal for beginners.

  3. It depends on the kind of waves you will be riding and where. I live in Hawaii and I started on a boogie board and a long board. I don't like "stand up" surfing so I stick with my boogie board now, but for beginners, I would say a long board would be your best bet. All of the surfing schools that we offer (I work for an online activity desk) use long boards for their beginner surfers since ANYONE can standup on a long board and ride. Even in mushy and blown out waves, you will be able to ride SOMETHING on a long board.
