Question:

Wanted: Free Needlework Etui pattern?

I'm looking for a free pattern of how to make a Needlework Etui, preferably an octagonal one. An Etui is a small box and once the lid is removed the sides of the box fall away like a flower. Used to hold needlework accessories, like pins, scissors etc.

  1. Couldn't find a free pattern for you. But here's a link with a picture of a Etui you've been looking for. Maybe you can make it by looking at it?

  2. An etui is simply a small case for something.  The specific one you describe is not characteristic of all etuis.  You can make a case out of anything suitable, really.  You could probably come up with your own pattern for this.  Get something stiff (cardboard, the old cover of a plastic notebook, etc) and some cloth.  Decide how big you want your case to be.  Cut the bottom out of your stiff stuff.  Make stiff side panels that fit.  Cut the top panel about 1/4" to 1/3" larger than the bottom panel.  Cut side panels for the box top.  Lay the side and bottom panels for the box itself on a large piece of paper and draw a circle that goes around them all.  This is the position they'll all be in, after all, when the lid is off.  Cut two circles of fabric to fit this, adding 1/2" of seam allowance all around the outside edge.  Glue or sew the panels into place, then sew your circles together.  Put the lid pieces together and cover with fabric.  That shouldn't have the flexibility that the bottom will.

There.  Who needs a pattern.  Make your own according to this guideline.  If you learn to visually dismantle things, you'll never need to buy another pattern again.
