Try venere.com. They have great accomodation in Venice wjich is reasonably priced and you only pay when you check out. You can browse by area also which is useful. My favourite is the Locanda Arco Antica.

I paid 52 € (breakfast include) in march 2006 for a nice room for two in the hôtel Domus Cavanis, right near the academy bridge.
