  1. You can get info on prices and times on the 'Trenitalia' website - www.trenitalia.com (available in English, don't worry!). Trenitalia run the vast majority of trains in Italy, but there are different types of train which cost different amounts (all run by Trenitalia)-

Eurostar (ES) trains are quickest and most expensive and you must have a seat reservation

Intercity (IC) trains are cheaper than Eurostar and a bit slower and a seat reservation is not compulsory (but advisable on busy routes)

Interregionale (IR) / Regionale (R) are cheaper still, but they stop at lots of stations and take a long time, and for Rome to Venice you'd probably have to change a couple of times. And the seating isn't as comfortable either!

There are other sorts, too - you might see 'diretto' (D) which are the same price as IR / R trains, and Intercity Notte (ICN), which is the sleeper train, plus some others. But have a look at the website, it should help. You can only get prices a certain amount in advance, but they're unlikely to change much so if you can't find a price for the day you want to travel, try one day next week. There's usually no financial benefit in booking in advance in Italy, unlike in the UK, although there are sometimes special offers on the Eurostar that might be worth looking at.

  2. In an effort to compete with low-cost airlines, trenitalia offers a limited number of discount seats on ES or EuroStar trains. Don't check one train and assume you've found the lowest price. If you're flexible, check a few times and even a few dates.

  3. The price is € 42 in second class and about 80 in first class, in eurostar more speedy...(sorry for language, I write from Rome  Italy)
