Question:

Wanting a rat or a fish tank but have a cat at home (read details, please)?

I have space in my room for a fish tank or even a rat habitat. Not sure which one I will go with...if I do go with anything.

I am just afraid of having a fish tank or rat with my cat. Here's the thing: I can close the door when I am not in the room to watch him but at night it needs to be open because he likes to sleep on my bed. I am just afraid at night it might do something lol. He LOVES to knock things over! I am thinking the cage or tank will be too heavy for that little to guy to knock over but what about all the other things he could do? Do you think the rat or fish would get scared of the cat? I don't want that to happen.

I have a fire belly toad tank but it is in a place he really cannot get to. I don't have any more "places he cannot get to" that is why I am asking about this. Maybe I should open the door to the fire belly toad tank and what him for a few moments to see what he does. I have never tried that. Maybe that would give me some insight about what he would do if I have a fish tank or cage out in the open.

I need advice, please!!! Personal experiences would help. Of course, my cat is very curious. Aren't they all? lol

  1. ive got two fish in my room and my cat always sleeps on my bed even when im not in there he never tries to hurt them sometimes he will look at the tank but normally he just leaves them alone

  2. i would recomend fish

simply bc cats eat rats and a cage is easier to knock over. When i had a rat i was sleeping and my cat knock the cage on the ground and the cage cracked and bedding was every where! And if your fish tank has a top then u have nothing to worry about.

  3. Fish are more suitable for your situation for many reasons not the least of which is that rats create a urine trail when ever they move that STINKS! If you are talking about your bedroom then you do not want a rat.

And you can collect lots of really cool fish and put a top on your tank so the cat can't bother them. And the good part is the kitty will be interested in looking at the fish but will not hurt them.

Get an aquarium and have a lot of fun putting in the gravel bottom and the filters. Someday when you have a lot more room available to you consider a rodent or two.

    Good luck!
