I want to build an awning-type overhang to provide shade. The side where the door is has no type of shade. I want to anchor the awning type overhand with metal posts. Where could I purchase these posts from? Do they have an official name?

  1. Short Scaffolding braces might work, also bridging(3/4" by 3/4" angle iron)  you can find this stuff usually at steel yards, home depot and other supply stores. All thread comes in handy too. Just attach together with screws and bolts unless you know how to weld. Often Home Depot and other stores that supply this stuff will cut it for you to the length you need.  All you will need is to drill the holes.  PVC makes good poles too, use your imagination the sky is the limit.

Oh yeah, look at the physics of the awning, put some thought into it.  Depending on how far you want hang it and how much weight you have.  These things effect your anchorage points and the angle of your bracing and supports.  Think of things like rain and wind as well.  Canvas lasts along time but still tears and rips in the wind.

  2. You can get decorative support columns, or structural  (sometimes called 'lolly columns').  The decorative columns come in a very wide range of choices.  You can even get vinyl wrapped support columns, with a metal or wood core.

Any building supply store will a selection of these.  (Lowe's, etc)

The columns will need to have some sort of support, or foundation.  (footer, pier, etc)  This can be as simple as digging a hole and pouring the concrete yourself for each post, to pouring a complete footer/foundation.  If you already have a deck, you may be able to put the supports over the deck piers.

One tip.... since this is a new addition, make it big enough to be comfortable!  I'd suggest you mark out a space, and see if you can open the door with your arms full...Ive seen one or two projects like this, that would have turned out so much better, if they'd just added another 12 inches, hehehe.
