I am a teenager weighing 208 lbs. I know capoeira is very active and i am losing weight, which is one of the reasons i want to learn capoeira. I also want to defend myself. I would like to know what i can do as of right now to get myself into basic Capoeira training.

Please nothing rude i'm trying my best here.

  1. Capoeira requires a lot of core strength and flexibility. This is all stuff that they will teach you and train you in. Unless you have a physical disability, you WILL be able to do it with enough training and dedication. There aren't very many schools that teach it though. You can look on Youtube for instructional videos, but without a real instructor, you won't be learning the art anytime soon.

Why do you want to learn Capoeira specifically?

If it's because you want to be able to move like they do, maybe look into gymnastics, break dancing, or even ballet!

If you legitimately want to defend yourself, Capoeira should be far down on your list. It's very awesome looking, and there's no doubt that the guys who do it are strong, but it's completely impractical in a street situation. My personal preference is more along the lines of what MMA fighters train in (i.e. Boxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jutsu, etc.) since they're actually training to fight.

    Good luck with your training!

  2. capoeira is very physical.

I say that losing some weight is definately a perk.  specially if you want to do some acrobatics.  the less weight you have to throw around the better.

get working on your stamina.  running, cycling, swimming is all good.

try to work out your legs, thighs and upper body (triceps and shoulders are very important)

furthermore enroll in class and enjoy yourself.  Capoeira is a bunch of fun

just to come back at the above poster.

Capoeira is a legitimate system of self defense that has been used by the Brazilian slaves to defend themselves for over 400 years.  It may not seem that effective at first sight but the underlying art is a very effective art.

Just to point out for MMA the origins of this kind of stuff lies in Brazil.  They have been holding vale tudo competitions for over 100 year and yes many capoeirista entered the ring and stood their own.

My teacher was a regional Vale tudo champion for 2years in Brazil

  3. hey  my friend  you are doing  great capoeira  has nothing to do with weight , s*x , age  or social status and  wht you need to  do  its  starting to  traing as soones possible and  you will notice the change in your body  and mind ......

i remember ,one time  my mestre told me  ..do not compare your self with no one  and  be your self  and accept wherever its going  around in  your life  then you'll be the best capoerista in your own terms and the developmet  will come  to your life

  4. If you really want to learn Capoeira, then go learn it!! It is very physically demanding, but you don't start off with the hard stuff.   You will work up to it as your fitness increases.  Sounds like you are on the right path.   Having a goal like that will help you achieve the fitness level that you are wanting.

Be careful though not to focus just on losing weight.  You need to be focusing on fitness, cardio, and strength.  Unless there is a medical reason, or you are not eating properly, then the weight will take care of its self. Run, walk, pushups, situps,  weight training will all work on the things you need for a Martial Art.

And yes, Capoeira is a Martial Art,   It is very pretty and flowing, but definitely can be used to defend yourself.  Anyone who says otherwise knows nothing about it.

As for nutrition, just eat well.  There is no need to remove something completely from your diet.  Avoid things high in fat, sugars, and sodium (salt).  If you are exercising allot, you will need carbs and starches (and even some fat).  Drink lots of water.  And be sure to treat yourself every-so-often.  Dark Chocolate is an excellent treat, and can actually benefit you in many ways.  Just dont eat one every day lol .  Pick a goal, IE, I am going to walk 4 miles.  Achieve that goal, and you get the Chocolate.  You have done something good for yourself, and rewarded yourself.

    Good Luck!!!
