Question:

Wanting to learn the Mandolin but I need help?

I have never played an instrument except for minor tinkering with things. I am interested in getting to learn the Mandolin. I do not really know what I am looking so I am hoping that is where you can help. I am not wanting some over the top over priced instrument, that will come later after practicing and seeing how I enjoy playing.

I found this instrument and accessories and I am wandering if this is a good deal to start with. If it is not good, where can I find a good quality instrument for a decent price.

Any other advice you want to throw in is appreciated.

If anyone is curious my inspiration for wanting to play is Chris Thile from his days with Nickel Creek and some of his work with the Punch Brothers.

  1. I'm usually not thrilled with Rogue instruments but that is a very good deal for $80.00, and Musicians Friend is a reputable company, so I would trust them.

I'm also not thrilled with the idea of buying any instrument through the Internet without the chance to look at and try the instrument out first, in person, but most generic music stores or even big chains like Guitar Center don't stock much of a selection in mandolins (assuming they have any at all).  So buying online may be your only choice, unless you live close enough to Lansing MI to visit Elderly Instruments' store, or close enough to New York City to go to Mandolin Brothers's store, or some other music store that specializes in acoustic folk instruments.

All things considered, I'd say the mandolin you're looking at will be OK to get you started.  Then later on if you stlck with it and decide you want to upgrade to a better instrument, you can do that.  Go for it
