Hi, I want to learn to drive, but I have a baby and I would be on a budget, does any one have any tips, reccomedations of driving schools/instructors or know how many lessons on average I should need and costs? Is there a minumum amount of hours you need before you're allowed to take a test?

Thanks for all answers!

  1. Everybody learns at a different rate, ask your friends if they can recommend a local instructor.

  2. Hi,

There are several options available. Some people will say that purchasing a car, and asking a friend or family member is the cheapest / best route for learning. Also others will tell you that it is better to learn with a qualified Instructor.

The driving standards agency reccomend you take 45 hours with an instructor, and 22 hours on your own (with friends and family).

If you become regular to instructor, you should get a discount of £2.00 per a lesson, enabling you to save about one hundred pounds all together, throughout the course of your lessons.

An Instructor once told me "The Cheapest isn't always the best". Correct he was.

I acutally know an instructor personally, but I didn't choose to learn with them, I went elswhere with another local instructor who had been doing driving instruction for about eighteen years, and had similar past experience of driving other vehicles.

Some schools may say you need more lessons than you actually do, I always trust and listen to my instructor, but if you ever find you are being ripped off, or you are ready, perhaps check the required standards from others, or even on the internet, and go about booking the test yourself.

You are always welcome to email me if you have any further questions. My email address link is on my yahoo profile page.

    Good luck

  3. Perhaps if you phone around the independent instructors in your area, you might find one with a young family whose partner might be able to look after your baby while you have a lesson. If you're in the UK, there's nothing to stop you taking the baby with you while you have lessons, provided you've got an appropriate child seat.

In the UK there's no minimum number of hours you need to be taught by an instructor. In fact, you can be taught by anyone over twenty-one who has held a full licence for over three years.

I have no idea of costs. I learnt to drive in 1981, so I'm sure costs have increased significantly since then!

  4. some people say you have to have a minimum no of lessons, but i know a girl who took a pre paid course, it does turn out cheaper and you learn quicker, and if you dont pass first time some pay for your tests ater that.
