Hello,

Basicly i've lived with my family for many year's.

I'm now 18 and i have a full time job.

Earning £180 a week

My job is far away but the traveling is killing me.

I'd like to rent my own flat.

Its an hour's drive away from my home.

The only problem is my parents are extremly over protective.

Any suggestions on what to tell them?

  1. At 18 you are certainly old enough to make your own choices. Just explain to them that your life would be less complicated if you moved closer to your job. Promise to come visit on the weekends, maybe for Sunday dinner. Good Luck!

  2. I was that age when I moved out. My mum was extremely over protective and my father had passed away just a few months before hand.

What I did is I told her I found this great flat that would be a lot closer to work and that it was perfect because my cousin was also looking to move out so we could get the place together. She didn't agree but at least she knew that I was looking into moving out.

I told her the next time we went to visit a place and I came home announcing that we had signed the lease.

It worked for me that way because I know she would not have let me do it any other way. She was a bit upset but didn't have any choices but to accept it. She knew I was responsible and had a good job.

    Good luck ! :)

  3. My daughter moved into her own place when she was 18.  Best thing she ever did for herself.  Kids have to leave sometime, and parents need to let them.  You seem to be responsible for yourself, so just tell you parents you'll miss them, but you need to do this.  They will understand.  Probably not right away, but it'll happen.
