Question:

Wanting to redo deck?

My husband and I need to replace our deck. I don't know what kind of wood the previous homeowner used but the planks are now rotting and need replacing as well as the railing. The frame looks to be in good shape so all we will do is take off the old planks and railing and replace with a composite. Is there anything I should know before we start this as far as support issues with the change from wood to composite? Any advice or suggestions? Anything at all would be appreciated. THanks.

  1. I love using composites, & applaud your choice.

The odds are good that the existing frame is plenty to support the plasticwood, so there shouldn't be any issues there.  The stuff is really easy to work with, but tough on sawblades, & the higher priced screws made for composites are worth the price.

      Have fun!

  2. "cedar or redwood", will require on-going maintenance.

While TIMBER TECH and TREX or similar composites will weather over time, it comes down to a cost of material verses maintenance over time.

Most of the composite railing systems require a wood post, so consider const. heart redwood or pressure treated.

  3. If you're going to rip up the walkboards, might as well replace the frame and joists. It may rot a few years later.

I have composite and it's worth the expense. Use decking screws to attach whatever route you take.

Have you though about pressure treated lumber? Lasts, resistant to insects and weather, less $$$

Above is a decent link. I'm not a strict fan of the brand, but the advice etc. is valid. Certainly in your case the framing and support being intact is most important. The use of composite finishes over any sub surfaces that are not viable, seems a huge waste of effort and $$$ to me.
