  1. My family created a fundraiser to benefit Crohn's disease with no experience, and we have been raising strong for three years. This year we have already raiser over $450,000!   All you have to do is start little, get together all of your friends and family and have them send emails to everyone you know asking for donations. Tell them that even one dollar makes a difference. Most people will donate more, and let me tell you, it all adds up. Stay determined and you can accomplish great things, btw I think what you are doing is great!

  2. you can raise money on your own without becoming an official non profit organization...but sometimes people don't want to give unless you are with a group they have heard of, because there are so many con artists out there.  I know you didn't want names, but the United Way is a good group that represents several different non profits.  If you raise money on their behalf, people may be more likely to give to you.  Creating your own non profit organization is a little bit more involved, and if you raise a lot of money, like thousands and thousands of dollars, if you aren't non profit, the IRS can come after you.  So call Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or the United Way, or visit their websites to protect yourselves, if you plan on raising lots of money for your charity.  And good for you- I think that you and your friend are wonderful people, and the world should have more people in it like you.

You would like for someone else to do the research for you? You can't be bothered to simply click on a web site? If you can't undertake the simple act of clicking on a web site, you are in no position start a charity.

  4. Check with the secretary of state website for your state (if you're in the US).  There should be information available on starting a business.  You want to look specifically for information on a Charitable Non-Profit (or 501 C 3).

    (for example:  http://www.filinginoregon.com/business/

    nonprofit_information.htm)

There are some very specific steps you have to take in order to create a 501(c)(3) and rules you have to follow in order to obtain and keep a tax-exempt status.

You might consider channeling your activities to those organizations already established for diabetes research fundraising

    Good luck
