I live in a poor community where families need clothes and things cheaply or free. I am not rich, so i will have to find a small way to start.

Something like a 5 & Dime store. We have 2 what we call " rag johnnies" here in town, but they are only open a few hours a week and have nothing more then clothes and broken toys.

Im not lok to getrich, Just $5.85 an hour would be ok if that was all i made, so long as i ran it my way.

Maybe this isnt they way i should go. Im looking for an idea to help the poor people, make make a little myself. i want a job to mean something. make a differance! HELP ME!

  1. Make a list of all of the nonprofit organizations that address the issues faced by your community in some way: soup kitchens, career closets, youth organizations, domestic violence shelters, literacy programs, etc. You can find these via VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org) and GuideStar (http://www.guidestar.org), as well as via your nearest United Way agency.

Then contact each organization to find out what it is doing in your community. Also ask how you could help, as a volunteer, with programs designed to help people in your community.

Perhaps you could help with outreach, placing flyers for these organizations and their services at churches/mosques/temples, library branches or anywhere where people in your neighborhood congregate, so that they know these services are available to them.

Volunteering is empowerment -- could you also help local people in your community learn about ways they could volunteer themselves, so that they could gain work experience and have ownership of the services meant to benefit them?

Remember that people like to define their own needs and ways to address them -- you need to talk to people and find out what they need. If you have an idea for a service you want to provide, you first need to ask people if that service is something they really want.

Finally, depending on your age, you can seek work at nonprofit organizations -- or for-profit organizations, for that matter -- and donate a part of the money you make to a nonprofit you feel is doing the most for your community.

"Just $5.85 an hour would be ok if that was all i made, so long as i ran it my way." -- that's not the kind of attitude nonprofits are looking for, actually. They are looking for people who can work well with others and are ready to run things according to the organization's own standards.
