Waqar, an unlucky runner living final days of his life in wildneress
An unfortunate but versatile runner, Waqar was acknowledged by only a few. During his professional racing career spanning eight years (1993-2001), the bay gelding ran plenty of good races, but all in defeat. He was last seen in September 2001, when he finished
17th on the table.
It would be injustice to discredit his efforts. During the 22-start-long career, the Coote Geelan-bred secured the runner-up place on four occasions. He also claimed the third place once in his life.
Waqar had loads of talent, but his racing journey proved to be an unfortunate spell. Failing to live up to the expectations, the talented gelding tasted no success during eight years.
Waqar failed to show what he got, when it mattered most. The only thing he showed was great fighting spirit. The Irish horse tried his best, but always remained unsuccessful.
Since he could not do special things on the tracks, the horseracing fraternity had no notable interest in his work in the stud. And Waqar is now living final days of his life in wilderness.
Under the command of C. J. O’Reilly, the skilful runners started off well, when sharing the podium in his first two encounters back in 1993. After doing the trick respectively at Bellewstown and Fairyhouse, he completely lost his direction, and suffered
a couple of awful defeats in the same year.
Things started to look good, when he finished second in two consecutive races in 1995. But again, Waqar gave away everything, and looked helpless in front of his rivals the following year.
His last good performance was seen by the spectators at Kilbeggan. In August 1997, Waqar - under the command of Patrick Lacey - grabbed the second place in the Dysart Maiden Hurdle.
He was unable to do anything good after that. Patrick Lacey trained him until the end of the career. The credit also goes to the connections for showing great patience despite back-to-back defeats.
Waqar failed to write his name in the history, but it does not mean he had no potential. He went very close to the glory on multiple occasions; however, something went wrong every time.
Waqar, during his entire career, did not enjoy an element of luck. And as a result, his journey ended in a disappointing way. No one remembers Waqar today, but we do. He was a versatile runner, for sure.
