Former Pakistani captain and coach, Waqar Younis, has backed http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 Cricket Board’s (PCB) decision to appoint Mohammad Hafeez as captain for the T20 format and hopes that the senior players will offer whole-hearted support to the
all-rounder.
PCB has recently replaced Misbah ul Haq as the T20 skipper and has shown immense trust on the abilities of Hafeez, who established himself at the international level last year, after a stop-start career. However, Misbah will continue
to lead the Green Shirts in the other two versions of the sport.
Hafeez has played a massive role in Pakistan’s success in the last 18 months as the all-rounder has been influential with both bat and ball. Apart from his batting skills at the top of the order, the 31-year-old cricketer from Sargodha
is considered among the top limited-overs bowlers of the world.
Waqar, who has been an integral part of Pakistani team management in the previous years, expressed that Hafeez is a thinking cricketer and this is the right step taken by the board as the all-rounder can still serve the country at
the highest stage for some more years, unlike the other candidates for captaincy.
However, the legendary fast bowler fears that the senior players may not support the opening batsman as has been the culture in Pakistani cricket over the years. He also praised PCB’s policy regarding captaincy and feels that no immature
decision has been taken.
“It would have been unwise to throw him into the deep end and give him the captaincy in the longer formats. He is a fine and right choice and he wishes him well and hope that he will be successful. I hope that Hafeez gets the support
of all the players in the team and the squad, particularly the senior players,” Waqar said.
The former Pakistani captain is all praise for the leadership skills of Hafeez and is confident that the opening batsman will do well for the country.
He added, “Hafeez has always provided good support to captains that he has played under and he deserves the support of his team-mates. I think things will work out well for him, especially in the shorter versions.”
