Waqar Younis hails the appointment of Whatmore – Cricket News Update
Former fast bowler, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Waqar-Younis-Maitla-c96193, has welcomed the appointment of Davenell Whatmore as the head coach of the Pakistan cricket team. Younis, while talking to Pakpassion, appreciated the selection committee for picking one of the best mentors around, who will
certainly help the national team in overcoming its weaknesses.
The ex-coach resigned from his position last year in September due to health concerns, and was subsequently replaced by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohsin-Hasan-Khan-c77595 on an interim basis. Under Khan’s 6-month supervision, The Men In Green claimed a series sweep against Bangladesh and Sri
Lanka, while whitewashing http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 by a 3-0 margin in the Test-leg of their tour to UAE earlier this year.
“I think the appointment of Whatmore is a good decision by the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 Cricket Board. Dav has done wonders previously and did really well in Sri Lanka in 1996 and then he worked with Bangladesh and led them to their first Test victory,” said Younis.
The former captain further believes that the Sri Lankan born coach has adequate experience in dealing with the Asian teams, and his familiarity to the sub-continent conditions will allow him to adjust to his new role quickly.
The legendary bowler however, added that the national team will have to work hard with Whatmore as he is known to be a tough and stringent trainer but is hopeful that his appointment will get the best out of the players.
The first task for the newly embedded mentor will be to fine tune the side for the upcoming Asia Cup, where the Men In Green will be competing against the likes of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 – all of whom pose a major threat in their
own rights.
PCB is also set to advertise the vacant position of a bowling coach after Aqib Javed resigned to take over as the head coach of UAE. Waqar however, has ruled himself out of the reckoning as he seems content with his current arrangement, working as an occasional
commentator.
“I left the role of head coach at the PCB due to personal reasons and I don’t see myself working as the bowling coach at this moment in time. No, I’m not really interested in the role at the moment,” told Younis.
