Waqar Younis is under fire from PCB for captain comments
Former Pakistan captain and now team coach, Waqar Younis, has received a show cause notice from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) authorities asking him to explain his comments about announcing the team captain.
His public statement is a violation of the newly revised PCB code of conduct.
The PCB code of conduct states that, players and officials are not allowed to criticise official decisions of the PCB in public.
PCB has announced a 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup without naming a captain because the board is in a state of dilemma to choose from One Day captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Misbah-ul-Haq-c1972.
Pakistan coach, Waqar Younis, in a post match ceremony at Basin Reserve http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wellington-c864, expressed surprise about the delay of naming the captain for the world cup squad.
He said "I am surprised that the board has delayed announcing the captain. I don't know the reasons for this but personally I think the captain should have been named with the team".
The board decision came under a lot of criticism by former Pakistan players such as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wasim-Akram-c96292 and Iqbal Qasim, who said it is” damaging for the team”.
Waqar Younis has represented Pakistan as a fast bowler from 1989 to 2003. In 2000 he remained out of the team for a concise period of time allegedly due to suspension and conflict with his bowling partner and captain of the team Wasim Akram.
He made a comeback as captain of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 and remained captain until his team could not make an impression in the 2003 World Cup. He announced his retirement in 2003 after being persistently ignored by the PCB.
Waqar Younis was appointed as Pakistan’s bowling coach for the first time in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/March-c74391 2006. After performing the job for less than a year, “the king of swing” resigned from the position on 6 January 2007.
He did this as protest against the PCB decision for retaining him only as a bowling coach for the Test series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 and not for the consequent One Day International (ODI) series that comprised of five matches.
He was again appointed as Pakistan’s bowling and fielding coach for their tour of Australia in 2009. In February 2010 he was appointed as head coach after Intikhab Alam was sacked due to poor performances by the Pakistan team during the tour of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746
earlier that year.
At the time he took charge as head coach, the Pakistan team was relatively inexperienced and lacked some big names such as Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf, and Shoaib Malik for the ICC T20 World Cup 2010.
Under the coaching of Waqar Younis, Pakistan progressed by leaps and bounds and reached the semi final of the T20 World Cup.
Following the T20 World Cup Pakistan performed well in the Asia Cup, which it lost to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 with a huge margin of 139 runs.
Shahid Afridi made a century off just 57 balls and helped Pakistan to a huge score of 385 runs.
The track record of Waqar Younis as a coach is pretty good and Pakistan’s team is performing exceptionally well in both formats of the game under his coaching.
With the ICC 2011 World Cup around the corner, official notices to Pakistan’s coach from the PCB can have a detrimental impact on team performance.
