Waqar Younis rates spot fixing saga as sad – Cricket News Update
Former http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Waqar-Younis-Maitla-c96193 has said that the spot fixing saga was heartbreaking, but he was satisfied after justice was done and the guilty players were sent to jail.
Waqar was the team’s coach during the troublesome English tour when http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Asif-c1993 were alleged of spot fixing after the Lord’s Test in 2010.
The trio was investigated over the matter by the International Cricket Council (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625) and got banned from international cricket for many years and were also charged with heavy fines.
Apart from this, they were also found guilty of receiving illegal payments and several other wrong doings, which saw them being jailed in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013.
The entire incident did not please Waqar and he said, “It was heartbreaking when it happened. There was depression, a lot of frustration and anger over what happened. Wherever we went the media followed us, even on helicopters, showing what we are doing.
Every move of us was being watched”
However, the former fast bowler said that he was happy that everything was over now and the culprits got punished. He said that it was a good lesson for the youngsters, who will never get involved in such habits.
The legendary cricketer added, “This incident is a lesson to the youngsters. I hope youngsters will learn from it and realise that spending time in jail is not easy. Justice was overdue and I am happy it is being done. The world can understand and now look
at Pakistan with a cleaner eye and probably a cleaner heart.”
Pakistan cricket went through a very bad time during the past couple of years, but Waqar kept the team together during his time as head coach. He helped the team reach the semi finals of the ICC Twenty20 and the 50-over World Cups and the team has started
performing consistently well in all three formats of the game.
Waqar stepped down from his job after the Zimbabwean series citing personal reasons. He will be considered as one of the best in the business for developing a strong Pakistani unit despite losing key players due to several controversies.
