Question:

War Nickel 1942-1945?

I won it out of a skill game and was wondering if it were worth anything? Thanks.

  1. In circulated condition, only worth a dollar or two.  But it's an interesting piece of history.  Traditionally, nickels weigh 5 grams and are .75 copper and .25 nickel, but 1942-45 war nickels (which can be identified by the large mint mark above Monticello's dome on the reverse) were .56 copper, .35 silver, and .09 manganese.  This eliminated nickel, a critical war material.  Maybe you'll someday also find a steel penny from 1943, which saved copper for all the munitions and electrical stuff needed for war.  Interestingly, many cartridge cases were subsequently recycled and used for coinage from 1944-46.


  2. I have several of those. Unfortunately, they are only worth $3-4 circulated, I believe.

  3. Check the official Guidebook to US Coins.  It's worth significantly more than 5 cents, depending on quality, so do not spend it.
