is it possible as a private civilian to buy the jet fighters, obviously it won't have weapons, any kind of stealth, and won't be any more dangerous to the military or the public as any other normal plane.

i'm just saying that if i had the money would i be able to buy one?

  1. Yes

  2. Check www.barnstormers.com / warbirdalley.com / and Courtesy Aircraft.

You can get Korean era MiGs easy and relatively cheap (compared to the 4 million for a Mustang/Corsair) or course operating costs are something else.

Rumor is there's a civilian F-16A Viper out there some where, but nobody I know's seen it fly (and I can't imagine the Hydrazine Response Team for the EPU).

There's also the Eastern Bloc of trainers; L-29 and L-39s for example.

  3. yes. Expect to pay a few million US$

    .

  4. Yes, there are quite a few of them, you can even purchase a mig-21 for under $300k. Ive seen F-86's in working condition for $250k, and Ive seen working hawker hunters for even less. The real problem is that they eat so much fuel its extremely expensive to operate. Think a few thousand dollars an hour.

  5. Yes it is possible but it is getting harder thanks to Home Land Security.  It is nearly impossible to get aircraft out of the former Eastern block now days, but there are a good number of aircraft already here in the United States you can buy - simply comes down to hard CASH.

You can find Mig 17, 19, 21 and even a 25 if you search the trade publications.

There is even older US Fighters on the market.

A6, F86, F84, there are a few F104 (but pay BIG BUCKS) and there is even a guy in LA who has a T-38.  Do not expect to see any F-4, (the gas bill would be more than owning the airplane, if you could get one), F14, F16 or any of that ever on the market.  After 9/11 the rules have changed and the best thing to do is buy one already out there with all the paperwork done.

  6. Yes.  1st/2nd Generation MiGs are popular and relatively cheap: MiG15, 17, 19 and 21.  Though with the latter two you're going to have a supersonic restriction in the US.  The Slovaks and Poles were unloading their MiG29s a few years ago.  That would be an enormous expense to fly though.

You might be better off with trainers:  easier to fly (though the MiGs are fairly forgiving in most civilian flight regimes), less expensive to operate and maintain.  The most common is the Czech L29/L39

Another possibility is an A37, the FAC version of the T37.  Uprated engines to give it a little more smash, and as easy to fly as the Tweet.

Were it me I'd opt for the UTI versions of the MiGs; always a good thing to take the significant other up with you-helps avoid "discussions", if you know what I mean.
