Question:

War songs/movies/books for English assignment?

For my English assignment I've been looking for a song/movie/book which has a strong opinion from a mother about her son going to war, either supporting it and being proud of him going, or opposing it and having to let him go against her own will.

I've found a few, but I was wondering if you had any other suggestions.

Thanks, Tiff

  1. this is gonna be lame, but the music video for "god must have spent a little more time on you" by NSYNC had a concept for that.

Forrest Gump for about 10 minutes of the film.

thats all i can think of.

  2. In Brothers and Sisters (TV series) Justin's mum didn't want him to go to war and she had a pretty strong opinion on it.

  3. the herd, i was only 19... vaguely like you asked... blue gum and john williamson also did this song

  4. Saving Private Ryan

Mother loses 3 sons in WWII.

  5. You'll find at this link information and the lyrics to a World War I & II song titled "I Didn't Raise My Son to Be a Soldier":

The film "Friendly Persuasion" has the parents, especially the mother, balking at their older son entering the American Civil War, especially because they are Quakers.

"Since You Went Away" (1944) shows the Homefront effort, with Claudette Colbert keeping her household going while her husband is serving in World War II. This one might not be too helpful, as I don't recall if there is a son going to war.

"Mrs. Miniver" (1942) was highly credited for raising morale. It's about an English family during World War II. They have a son in the RAF.

In "Gone With the Wind", there is a scene in which people are receiving word about who survived a battle.  A teenage boy who has learned that his older brother was killed vows that he is going to enlist, much to his elderly mother's alarm. Scarlett scolds him into not talking about it.
