Waratahs Vs Brumbies: Super XV round 18 – Super Rugby match recap

Waratahs bonus point victory over fellow Australian conference team Brumbies has earned them a place in the 2011 Super Rugby championships. The Waratahs 41 – 7 win gave them five points on Saturday, June 18 against the Brumbies at the Aussies Stadium and
has placed them at the fifth position in the combined Super XV table.
Waratahs at the end of the 2011 Super Rugby round-robin matches have won 10 of the 16 games they have played in the season and secured 57 points. Brumbies have had a poor Super Rugby season and are fourth in the Australian conference and 13th
in the combined table with four wins and 33 points coming from their 16 matches played during the season.
Waratahs, who were playing in front of their home crowd, started the match strongly and dominated the proceedings of the match all day long.  
Waratahs were first to score in the game courtesy of their winger Lachie Turner’s second minute try followed by their Rebels bound fullback Kurtley Beale’s conversion.   
In the first-half, both teams tried to gain ball and territory possession and looked like they would score but failed to do so. The only other scoring of the first-half came from the hosts in the 23rd minute of the game when Beale scored on a
penalty. The scorecard read 10 – 0 in favour of the Waratahs at the break.
Waratahs lead by 10 points over the visitors and started the second-half with a positive attitude. Beale kicked his second penalty of the game during the 44th minute of the game to extend the Waratahs lead to 13 points. A few minutes later, Waratahs
lock Sitaleki Timani scored the second try for the Waratahs in the 46th minute of the game. Beale followed by his conversion to double the lead within 10 minutes of the second-half.
In next 10-minute passage, Brumbies tried to make their way back into the game but failed to capitalise on the opportunities created by the squad. Waratahs extended their lead courtesy of their substitute flanker Chris Alcock’s 59th minute try
followed by Beale’s third conversion of the game.
ACT Brumbies kept on trying their best to develop a scoring oppurtunity but failed to develop an real threatening scoring moves. Waratahs substituted fly half, Sosene Anesi, scored the bonus point try for Waratahs in the 67th minute of the game
to earn Waratahs their first point of the match on the table. Beale followed with a conversion as Waratahs continue to defend impressively and kept the Brumbies scorless.
Waratahs fifth and last try of the game was scored by their number eight David Dennis in the 75th minute of the game followed by the Beale’s conversion to take the scorecard reading 41 – 0.
With a few minutes remaining in the game, Waratahs were all set to keep the Brumbies a zero in the game. However, Brumbies substituted scrum half, Francis Fainifo, managed to score a try in the 80th minute of the game followed by their fly half
Matt Giteau’s conversion to take the scorecard reading 41 – 7 at the end of regulation time.
Waratahs will now play against the Blues at Auckland in the first 2011 Super Rugby play-off encounter on Friday, June 24.
