Warhammer 40,000 help?

i really want to get into war hammer 40,000 but i don't know what race to choose

i'm a big fan of Dawn of War and my best race are the eldar but i dont know whether i should choose them or not :\

im more into quick lethal attacks and building defence before attacking

well, keep in mind that in alot of ways, the computer game and the tabletop game have little if anything in common.  If you like the Eldar, and enjoy their fluff, then I say go for it.  Decide on what kind of army you want, between "assault" and "shooty".  "Shooty" armies will focus alot on your Dire Avengers, Guardians, and other such units, while assault armies will be using alot of Howling Banshees, Striking Scorpions and Harlequins.  The Eldar's primary weakness, though, is that the individual units more or less have single roles that they perform marvelously, while they are almost incapable of all other tasks.

I'd say start with a small Space Marines army, as they're generally very simple, and easy to get used to.  They are also quite forgiving of minor tactical blunders.  Also, not alot of models are needed to fill out the points in the ary, so that could save you a bit on the cold, hard cash involved.

You might want to consider pre-ordering the new starter set they're coming out with.  It comes with a small Marines force, and a small Ork force, and for what you'll be getting, half of the miniatures are being GIVEN away to you.  Also, it comes with a small, summarized version of the main rule book, complete with a second mini-book on how to play the game.
