  1. How much time do you have on your hands and how many models do you plan to paint?

Necrons are the classic quick, easy army when it comes to painting: spray black, drybrush Boltgun Metal, add green plastic rods and you're ready to rock and roll.

Thousand Sons are far more intricate, with a blue and yellow colour scheme that's hard to carry off without practice and planning.

If it's a whole army you're going for and you've got a good, steady hand and plenty of painting experience, then go with the Sons, because as a massed force they look fantastic.

If you're newer to the hobby, or simply want a decent army quickly, go with the Necrons.

Personally, I'm working on a Necrons army myself at the moment and I think they look awesome (but I'm doing some complicated conversions).
