Question:

Warhammer 40k: do i have to roll a pinning test for EACH model in a unit?

let's say my space marine transport vehicle gets destroyed/wrecked with 10 troops inside. since the vehicle is wrecked...all the troops must disembark and take a pinning test.

here is where i get confused. do i roll a 2d6 leadership test for EACH model, one at a time? so, basically i would just point to each model and roll for that model to see if he passes? and then continue until all models are rolled for.

or is there another way to do it?

thanks for any help

  1. No, my friend, you just Roll for the Unit & use the highest L/ship in the unit. e.g. if there is a commander or some other character like a Vet Sgt who may have a higher L/Ship than the other models.

  2. Leadership tests of all sorts* (pinning, morale etc) are rolled using the highest Ld in the "unit"**.  Units are clearly defined in the 5th Ed rulebook and include infantry and jump infantry squads, bike squadrons and independent characters.

Note that an independent character that has joined a unit counts as part of that unit for all purposes*** including Leadership tests (and will usually have a higher Ld than the unit, thus enhancing its sticking power by his presence).

So in your case, you roll only once, for the whole unit, using the highest Ld in the unit.  If you pass, the unit carries on as normal.  If you fail, the unit is pinned.

*Except psychic tests, which are taken using the Ld of the psyker only and cannot be affected by other special rules governing Ld tests unless specifically stated in the rule.

**Some special rules extend this.  Most famously is the "Rites of Command" Space Marine special rule that allows all friendly Space Marine units on the table to use the Ld of the Space Marine Commander.

***Except Kill Points in the Annihilation scenario.
