  1. Well, you should have got a 25mm round base with the model.  This is the standard Warhammer 40,000 infantry base and models that come with the base should be mounted on it.

If you've got a plastic ork, you'll need to glue its feet to the base.  If you've got a metal one, then you should have a slottabase with a cut-out strip into which you can fit the tab on the bottom of the model.  With metal models, I recommend bending the tab very slightly, using pliers, to ensure a tight fit before glueing.

Once you've fitted your model to the base you need two more things: sand (or flock, which is dyed sand) and PVA glue (also known as wood glue or as Elmer's in the US).  You can either do this before or after painting, depending on your inclinations.  I use sand and so I do this before painting so that I can also paint the base.

Using an old brush, paint the PVA glue generously on the base around the model's feet, trying not to get any on the model.  Then dip the model into the sand or flock (if you pour some sand or flock into a yoghurt pot or similar, this makes this bit a lot easier).  Allow about an hour to dry and then paint.

There are lots more advanced techniques on basing (you can use slate or extra details like discarded weapons, helmets or limbs (!), but get to grips with this simple method and you can explore other options once you're happy with basic basing.

    Have fun!
