  1. I was much like yourself.  I bought one of their catalogues which showed most of the different unit types from all of the different armies.  Then I just picked one I thought looked the coolest.  Seriously.

Just think about what you would like your army to be: Super soldiers, mindless alien killing machines, evil mongrels,  weak but well armed humans etc.  Do you want your army to be close range hand to hand specialists or do you want to sit back and shoot your opponent to pieces (or use both tactics)? Do you like the idea of a small group of mega elite troops taking an enemy apart or swamping them with an overwhelming tide of numbers?

Most Games workshop stores have club days where people come in and play against each other.  Just go in for a few hours and watch people play.  See what models you like, what moves are employed which you enjoy.

Once you have decided on an army... or even just a few models you like, purchase and paint.  Each packet contains info on the paints you will need so buy them and a couple of brushes as well (most people in the Games Workshop stores are only too happy to help).  Don't worry too much about the rules or what units you can field, just paint up ones you like the look of to start with.  Never hurts to buy the codex for your army as well so as you can learn about them as you paint..

But there is nothing like just talking to the staff or other gamers.

Hope this has helped a bit.  Enjoy

  2. Start Orks, the new models are awesome!!!
